How to care for your glass jewellery
Share
Glass is surprisingly durable. My jewellery is made from glass that has been carefully heated, shaped and cooled in the kiln, so it’s made to be worn.
But glass is still glass, and a hard knock or a drop onto a tiled floor can break it. Here are a few simple things you can do to keep your jewellery looking lovely.
Can I wear my glass jewellery every day?
Absolutely. Most of my jewellery is made for everyday wear.
Just be a little careful when you're doing things where your jewellery might get knocked. I’d take it off for things like gardening, DIY or exercise.
Can I wear it in the shower or swimming?
The glass is fine with water, but I recommend taking your jewellery off before showering or swimming.
This is mainly because of the sterling silver. Water, chlorine and salt can make silver tarnish more quickly. It also means you’re less likely to drop or knock your jewellery while you're getting ready.
What about perfume and moisturiser?
It’s best to put perfume, hairspray, moisturiser and sunscreen on before you put your jewellery on.
These things won't damage the glass, but they can build up on the surface and aren't particularly good for the silver.
How do I clean my glass jewellery?
A little warm water and mild soap is usually all you need.
Gently wash the glass with your fingers or a soft cloth, then rinse and dry it with a clean, soft cloth.
Don't use anything rough or scratchy on the glass.
If your piece has sterling silver, you can use a silver polishing cloth on the silver. Just take care not to rub the glass with it.
Can I sleep in my glass jewellery?
You can, but I wouldn't recommend it.
Apart from being more comfortable without it, taking your jewellery off at night means there's less chance of catching it on something or knocking it against a hard surface.
What happens if I drop it?
Hopefully nothing!
Glass jewellery is stronger than it looks, but it can break if it lands on a hard surface at the wrong angle. If you do drop a piece, have a good look at it before wearing it again. Small chips or cracks can sometimes be hard to see.
If something has broken, please get in touch. I’d much rather hear from you than have you trying to glue it back together.
How should I store my jewellery?
When you're not wearing your jewellery, keep it somewhere dry. A jewellery box or soft pouch is ideal.
I wouldn't recommend keeping all your jewellery loose together in a drawer, particularly if you have delicate pieces. Glass and metal knocking against each other isn't ideal.
And finally...
The main thing is to wear your jewellery!
These pieces are made to be worn, not kept safely in a box forever. Just give them a little care and they should have a very long life.
And if you're ever unsure about how to look after a particular piece, just get in touch. I'm always happy to help.
