Jewellery hammers in the studio

Made in New Zealand | Wearing Glass

When you’re shopping for jewellery, you might come across terms like "NZ Made" or "Designed in New Zealand." But what do these phrases really mean? Let’s break it down so you can make an informed choice and truly support local artisans.

Handcrafted NZ made jewellery

When we say something is "NZ Made," it means the jewellery is crafted right here in New Zealand. This typically involves local artisans who pour their heart and soul into each piece. They use locally sourced materials whenever possible and create jewellery in small batches or even one-of-a-kind items. Buying NZ Made means you're supporting local businesses, contributing to the economy, and often getting a piece with a unique story and higher quality craftsmanship.

Jewellery designed in New Zealand

On the other hand, "Designed in New Zealand" usually means that while the creative process happens here, the actual manufacturing is done overseas. Companies might design their jewellery in New Zealand but outsource production to other countries, often to cut costs. This doesn’t necessarily mean lower quality, but it does mean that the piece isn’t fully "Kiwi made." These items might be more affordable, but they don’t contribute as much to the local economy or support local artisans directly.

Why does it matter?

Supporting NZ Made jewellery means you’re getting a product that’s been through a meticulous crafting process right here at home. You’re helping to keep traditional crafts alive and supporting local artists who are passionate about what they do. Plus, NZ Made jewellery often has a smaller environmental footprint due to reduced shipping distances and locally sourced materials.

When you buy jewellery that’s designed here but made overseas, you might be getting a cheaper product, but it comes at the cost of less local involvement. It’s important to check if the brand is transparent about where and how their jewellery is made. Some brands maintain high ethical standards even when producing overseas, but it’s always good to know what you’re supporting.

How to spot the difference

  • Look for the NZ Made logo: This is a good indicator that the product is genuinely kiwi made.
  • Ask questions: Don’t hesitate to ask the seller about where and how their jewellery is made.
  • Read the fine print: Product descriptions can give you information about the jewellery.

How I use glass to make my jewellery

In my studio, I use glass to create unique, handcrafted jewellery pieces. I love the versatility and beauty of glass. Using traditional lampworking techniques, I melt and shape the glass into beads and pendants.

The process involves heating the glass with a torch until it becomes pliable, then carefully shaping it into the desired form. Once cooled, the pieces are polished to a smooth finish. I often incorporate vibrant colours and interesting patterns, ensuring each piece is truly one-of-a-kind.

My glass jewellery is a reflection of my passion for this ancient craft and my commitment to creating beautiful, wearable art.

In the end, whether you choose NZ Made or New Zealand designed jewellery depends on what matters most to you. If supporting local artisans and the economy is a priority, then going for handcrafted NZ Made pieces is the way to go. If affordability and supporting Kiwi designers is your focus, then designed in New Zealand but made overseas could work for you.

Whatever you choose, knowing the difference helps you make an informed decision and ensures you’re happy with your purchase. Happy shopping, and always wear your jewellery with pride!
